The San Lorenzo School Interact Club, headed by Pres. Cybelle Villarino, in partnership with the SLS Student Assembly, headed by Pres. Alaiza Manebog, supported by the Rotaract Club of Metro San Pedro, Rotary Club of San Pedro Magic, and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Metro San Pedro successfully organized the local Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) of Area 1 District 3820 at San Lorenzo School on January 21, 2023. RYLA 2023 with a theme “Youth, the only Ecolution” focused on the importance of the youth as a catalyst in solving the problems in our environment. Their plenary speakers included Ms. Laurie Zuckerman, the Director of Communications of the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), and Ms. Josefina Bandalan, an International Regional Rehabilitation Technical Specialist in East Africa. The hybrid plenary session with Ms. Zuckerman was made possible with Zoom videoconferencing. Despite the time difference, Laurie who was still nursing a broken arm after a jogging injury gamely engaged the rylarians with intuitive presentations and informative responses during the Q&A. Ms. Bandalan who was physically present for her plenary session made sure that the students were actively involved while sharing the environmental issues experienced by Africans on the other side of the world. The RYLA was successfully attended by over 150 participants with the support of District RYLA Chairperson Ding Navasero, District Governor Gina Sy, and Metro San Pedro Club President Margarette Lloyd Olivares.
The “RYLA 2023: Youth, the only Ecolution” was featured in ESRAG‘s blog. The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group which was officially recognized by Rotary International in 2015, empowers members of the Rotary family worldwide to take significant actions to sustain our environment and stabilize the climate.
